TUCSON, Ariz. — The group "Friends of Saguaro National Park" is celebrating the next step toward completing an outdoor patio at the Rincon Mountain Visitors Center.

The patio will be an accessible space year-round for community groups to use for education and as a spot for visitors to relax after exploring the desert. Thursday was the groundbreaking for that patio.

Fred Stula, the executive director of Friends of Saguaro National Park, says the group was happy to provide funding to help improve the visitor experience.

"In 2015 Friends provided $180,000 to support the renovation of the Rincon Mountains Visitors Center, and during that process they identified that they need a large, outdoor classroom area that they have at the Red Hills Visitor Center on the west side of town, but there's none of that here on the east side," he said.

The grand opening for the educational patio is expected sometime this fall.
