TUCSON, Ariz. — A new Midwifery Center coming to Tucson in July is expanding birthing options for expectant moms.

The new facility replaces the former El Rio Birth Center, and is a collaboration between El Rio Health and TMC for Women. It provides an accredited in-hospital birthing unit that offers a family-centered experience for women at low risk and want to have a natural, un-medicated birth.

"Both of our institutions are well-known for excellence in the care of new moms and babies. This effort expands the choice for parents so they can best honor their vision for their labor and recovery experiences," said TMC Healthcare chief operating officer Mimi Coomler.

The Midwifery Center's practice model includes:

  • water births
  • Minimal interventions and support for normal birthing process
  • Families are able to go home within 4-12 hours after delivering their babies

If any challenges arise in the birthing process, TMC's expertise is available close by and around the clock, TMC Healthcare said in a press release.
