Mother, daughter found stranded in desert

Posted
GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - A mother and her 11-year-daughter were rescued after getting stranded in the desert on the Phoenix area's southwestern fringe for several hours overnight.

Goodyear police say the woman called 911 late Monday night to report that she had driven into a ditch at the end of a road and gotten stuck in sand.

Police responded but the woman and girl had left the area. Ground teams, police helicopters and Arizona Department of Corrections bloodhounds then began searching.

Searchers found the girl about a mile out into the desert and the mother was found a short time later.

Both were unharmed but police advise having a blanket and other emergency supplies while driving during the winter.

They also advise calling 911 and then staying with the vehicle until help arrives.
