DOUGLAS, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Douglas Police are investigating criminal damage and theft from headstones at a Douglas cemetery.

Public Information Officer Jose Duarte says a man called police to report that an unknown person or persons had damaged a headstone and taken the bronze or copper name plate at the Julia Page Cemetery located in the 1300 block of 3rd Street.

During their investigation, officers discovered a total of 72 headstones had either been damaged and/or were missing the bronze name plate.

Officers believe the damage and thefts happened over the past few months and were now being reported as families were coming to clean or check up on gravesites.

Douglas Police have only been able to identify four or five victims and are working with City of Douglas Cemetery Staff and other personnel to identify more victims or families that may be affected by the damage or thefts.

Douglas Police is seeking assistance from the community in an attempt to identify any possible suspect(s) involved with the damage or theft from the cemetery.
