MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney is showing his support for one-time rival John McCain as the senator seeks re-election in Arizona.
Romney appeared at U.S. Sen McCain's re-election campaign rally at a Mesa high school on Saturday afternoon.
Romney, the former governor of Massachussetts, and McCain ran against each other during the 2008 GOP presidential primary.
McCain won the party's nomination but lost to President Barack Obama in the general election.
Romney won the 2012 Republican nomination and also lost to Obama in the fall.
McCain is battling a primary challenge from a tea party-backed state senator, Kelli Ward of Lake Havasu City. Political newcomer Alex Meluskey and several other Republicans also have filed papers seeking McCain's seat.
If McCain wins the primary, he'll face Democratic Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick in November's general election.
