MESA, Ariz. (AP) - Mesa police say a police officer fatally shot a man who reportedly charged officers while wielding a metal pipe or rod in a gated residential neighborhood where he lived.
Detective Steve Berry says the incident Thursday night began with a report of a suspicious man walking with a steel pipe in a gated community.
Berry says the man was banging the metal object on the ground when officers found him.
Berry says at least one officer used a stun gun on the man when he refused to drop the object but that the man then got up and, still wielding the object, ran toward the officers before one officer shot him.
The man's identity was not released. No officers were injured.
