UPDATE: 3:26 p.m., May 6
Tucson Police identified the man who was shot and killed Friday, just south of the Lost Barrio shopping district in midtown as 47-year-old Nathan Daniel Gabaldon.
Detectives determined that Gabaldon had been in an altercation with 24-year-old Anthony Avalos in a nearby neighborhood earlier in the day. Avalos left, returned with a firearm, discharged it but didn't strike anyone, according to a news release from TPD.
Gabaldon moved on to an area with several unhoused living in tents in the 500 block of South Park Avenue, near Aviation Highway. Gabaldon began assaulting several people, including an adult woman and a dog, the news release said.
The woman retrieved the firearm from Avalos. She pointed it at Gabaldon and gave repeated commands for him to leave the area, the news release said. Gabaldon advanced toward her and she fired her weapon, the news release said.
Gabaldon died at the scene.
The woman has not been charged as of yet, but the case is being presented to the Pima County Attorney's Office for review, the news release said. Avalos was arrested on suspicion of discharging a firearm within city limits.
The investigation is ongoing.
