Man hit by police cruiser sentenced to 21 years in prison

A man who was struck by a Marana police cruiser after going on a crime spree in February of 2015 has been sentenced to 21 years in prison. 

Police arrested Mario Miranda Valencia after he stole a rifle from a local Walmart. He then ran off into a nearby business park and fired off a gunshot. The bullet did not injure anyone. 

A Marana police officer then used his patrol car to hit Valencia, injuring him and allowing the officer to take him into custody. 

Tucson police say on the day of the incident Valencia committed several crimes before being arrested in Marana including: 

  • Stealing items from a 7-Eleven at 4295 E. 29th Street.
  • An arson of Tucson Baptist Temple, 1525 S. Columbus Blvd.
  • Invading and stealing a car from a home in the 3900 block of E. Paseo Dorado.
  • Firing his rifle at W. Coca Cola Pl. (Between N. Casa Grande Hwy and N. Business Park Dr.)
