As Hurricane Harvey nears Texas, the American Red Cross is deploying volunteers to Houston to assist people in need.

American Red Cross has already deployed 26 volunteers from Arizona.

The red cross says there is a massive push to get "thousands" of volunteers to Texas.

There is already 1,000+ deployed or on their way.  This is a Level 7 disaster for the Red Cross, the highest level.  We plan to open over 100 shelters.

From the Southern Arizona chapter, Cheryl Taylor and Naomi Johnston are some of the next on the way.

"I have been on several disasters and this is the beginning of the disaster," said Taylor.

She says the Red Cross is well prepared for this disaster, but is already anticipating to be out there for two weeks.

"This is already a big deal so I assume we are going to have lots of shelters," she said. "I have been in Houston before and the terrible issue with them is flooding."

The best way to help is to donate money by texting "RedCross" to 90999 to make a $10 donation or visit RedCross.org
