MESA, Ariz. (AP) — Ken Cost has been named as Mesa's new police chief after serving as interim chief for nearly four months.

City officials announced the appointment Monday afternoon. Cost has been with Mesa police for 25 years.

He has served in many areas in the department and in every rank leading up to assistant chief, to which he was promoted in March 2018.

Cost became interim chief on Nov. 5 after Ramon Batista abruptly resigned after 2 { years on the job.

Batista stepped down after months of criticism about his leadership from his officers.
