TUCSON, Ariz. - Border Patrol officials say they found an unfinished border tunnel in Nogales Monday afternoon.
According to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Mexican authorities and Tucson sector border patrol agents found the tunnel during a routine sweep.
Officials say the entryway was underwater along the channel between the Mexican and U.S. cities of Nogales. The 50-foot tunnel came to an abrupt stop under a parking lot on the U.S. side.
Inside, officials found structural and excavation tools that seemed to indicate someone was still working on the tunnel before it was discovered.
CBP officials say they'll keep an eye on the tunnel until it's eventually secured and filled with concrete.
