UPDATE: Southside shootout involving Drug Enforcement, DPS, leaves one dead

The Arizona Department of Public Safety has provided new information about the Thursday morning incident.

According to DPS, the Drug Enforcement Administration's Special Response Team was assisting DPS' Gang Task Force in serving a residential search warrant as part of an ongoing criminal investigation at 11:20 a.m.

The agents were fired upon during entry, DPS said. One DEA agent was struck and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

One person died at the scene.

There was no threat to the public.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety's Major Incident Division will lead the investigation into the shooting, DPS said.

KGUN 9 is monitoring a heavy law enforcement presence in the area of South Forgeus Avenue and East 36th Street.

KGUN's Craig Smith is on the scene. He reported that SWAT and a helicopter were present, along with other law enforcement officials.

Emergency crews, a fire truck and an ambulance were also on the scene, but have since left.
