Federal funding is helping preserve and provide ready access to decades of Arizona history in the form of newspapers.

The state received a $279,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities to digitize approximately 100,000 pages of historic newspapers.

That material will be addition to approximately 380,000 pages of newspapers already digitized by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records since 2008.

The National Endowment grant is the fourth for the project.

Previous digitization covered 68 historic titles published between 1859 and 1922 - a time period that included Arizona's territorial years and statehood.

The material is available digitally on both the Library of Congress' "Chronicling America" site and on the Arizona Digital Historic Newspapers platform.
