Some teachers in Vail donated food and water to students forced to stay at home during the teacher walkout.

Teachers at Desert Willow Elementary school were at Purple Heart Park giving out food and water to students.

Mark Stephens, with the PTA, says their school had enough teachers to stay open during the walkout, but it wasn't up to them. The district superintendent made the decision to close all schools within the district.

Stephens says, "I support teachers getting more funding." But he goes on to say, "the walkout really became a lockout when teachers were told they weren't welcome to teach."

Although Stephens feels like the walkout turned into a lockout, he says sacrifices do have to be made for the long-term benefit of the state.
