PHOENIX (AP) - Prosecutors say an undercover FBI agent's presence outside a Prophet Muhammad cartoon contest near Dallas where two men launched an attack had nothing to do with earlier activities of the two attackers.
They say the agent wanted to show a suspected Islamic State recruiter that he could follow instructions in staging a protest.
Prosecutors say the agent didn't know two Phoenix men who would later be killed after opening fire at the event were in Texas prior to the attack.
Abdul Malik Abdul Kareem, convicted of providing guns to the attackers, cites the agent's presence in seeking a new trial.
Prosecutors say the agent was communicating with Erick Jamal Hendricks from the scene.
Hendricks was later convicted of conspiring to support the Islamic State, but wasn't charged in the attack.
