The last time many families spoke to their relatives in Puerto Rico was right before Hurricane Maria hit the island.

Litza Menendez says her entire family remains in Puerto Rico, aside from her husband and son. She said it was very stressful to not be able to speak with her family and find out if they were safe.

"Finally today my brother made contact. It was very short because the connection would drop and he wanted to call as many people as he could."

Menendez learned her family was safe, without power but they had survived the storm.

Although hurricanes aren't new for Puerto Rico, Mendendez says her brother had never felt a storm with this power.

"He told me, I'm 59-years-old and I have never been so scared in my life. He's been used to all these hurricanes and nothing will prepare him for what they went through."
