PHOENIX (AP) - More than half of the 59,000 Arizonans who will need to change health insurance companies because of the planned Jan. 1 closure of the state's nonprofit co-op have chosen new carriers.

The rest have just until Tuesday to choose a new insurer if they don't want to see an interruption in insurance coverage.

Those who don't act will have an extra month in this year's open enrollment period to choose a new carrier but will see a lapse in coverage if they don't act now. Open enrollment closes Jan. 31, but Meritus customers will have until March 1.

Officials with Meritus Health Partners say they're pleased that so many of their customers have searched for and purchased new insurance. The numbers were provided to Meritus last Wednesday by federal officials.
