Facebook Messenger now lets users delete sent messages

Posted

Facebook Messenger is rolling out a feature that gives users the ability to delete a sent message.

According to a report from TechCrunch, the app allows for a sent message to be deleted within 10 minutes of sending it. After choosing to remove the message, other people in the conversation will see a "tombstone" indicating that a message was deleted.

This feature is out today in Poland, Bolivia, Colombia and Lithuania on IOS and Android.

"The pros are that users want to be in control . . . and if you make a mistake you can correct it. There are a lot of legitimate use cases out there that we wanted to enable,” Facebook’s head of Messenger Stan Chudnovsky told TechCrunch in an exclusive interview. But conversely, he says, “We need to make sure we don’t open up any new venues for bullying. We need to make sure people aren’t sending you bad messages and then removing them because if you report them and the messages aren’t there we can’t do anything.”

Facebook says the feature will be global soon.
