TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a man has died in a five-car collision on a freeway in Tempe.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the incident happened Tuesday morning on U.S. 60 near McClintock Drive.

DPS officials say a 49-year-old man failed to slow down amid traffic congestion in the westbound lanes.

His vehicle crashed into another. The impact caused the unidentified man, who was not wearing a seatbelt, to be thrown from his car.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash led to a chain reaction involving three other cars. Those drivers suffered only minor injuries.

The investigation into the cause remains ongoing.

A stretch of the westbound lanes was closed but has since reopened.
