The U.S. Border Patrol says its agents have arrested the driver of a commercial tractor-trailer on suspicion of trying to smuggle migrants into the United States inside his refrigerated truck.
Agents arrested the 47-year-old Mexican man Monday night after a trained dog alerted them to the truck at the Interstate 19 immigration checkpoint. They found 18 people ranging in age from 15 to 40 years hiding inside the trailer refrigerated at 36 degrees Fahrenheit (2 degrees Celsius). Two migrants were from Guatemala and 16 from Mexico.
The agency said Wednesday that the migrants were held on immigration violations, and the driver faces federal smuggling charges.
