DPS says vehicles in freeway crash may have been racing

Posted

Part of Interstate 17 remains closed in northwest Phoenix because of a crash that the state Department of Public Safety says may have involved vehicles racing on the freeway.

Officials say the closure of southbound I-17 between Northern and Southern Avenues because of the crash that occurred at about 2:30 a.m. is expected to last through the Friday morning commute.

Trooper Kameron Lee says two of three vehicles involved in the crash may have been racing prior to the collision and that one of the three vehicles rolled, ejecting the female driver who has life-threatening injuries.

The frontage road in the closure area remains open but the Arizona Department of Transportation advised drivers to take alternative routes such as State Route 51.
