Surprise, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - Two people were killed Sunday morning after a wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle on the Loop 303, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

Spokesman Raul Garcia tells ABC 15 DPS dispatchers received reports of a maroon-colored SUV traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the Loop 303 near Bell around 1 a.m.

DPS troopers found a head-on crash involving a maroon SUV and a white truck shortly after.

Garcia said both drivers, both males, were declared dead at the scene. There were no passengers in either vehicle, he said.

The victims' identities were not released pending notification to family.

It is not yet known why the suspect vehicle was traveling the wrong way, he said, but possibility of impairment has not been ruled out.

The roadway was closed for about six hours Sunday morning, but reopened shortly before 7 a.m., according to the Arizona Department of Transportation
