Tucson DOT is contracting to have new storm water grates installed on Tucson Boulevard south of Grant that makes it harder for bicycle wheels to lodge in the drainage gaps. The new style allows for safer passage of cyclists to move across them without the worry of getting thrown off their bikes.

The older style will be replaced beginning Monday, June 4th. TDOT's contractor will spend the next few days retrofitting the existing catch basin underneath the drain grates to allow them to fit properly.

Another benefit of the new grates allows faster drainage of storm water from the street and into the catch basin, because the new design minimizes water resistance.

Traffic restrictions will involve north and southbound lane shifts on Tucson Boulevard, as the contractor works from one side of the street to the other. Variable message signs have been posted alerting motorists to the road work for the next several days.
