TUCSON, Ariz. - In January, the Arizona Department of Transportation milled away the asphalt that covered I-10 between Ruthrauff Road and Miracle Mile after commuters made it aware the asphalt was coming apart and striking car windshields.

The milling project was done on the eastbound lanes of I-10 between Ruthrauff and Miracle Mile.

Tom Herrmann with ADOT said since the asphalt was completely milled off, now the stretch of road is left with the concrete underneath the asphalt.

"There are many advantages actually using concrete on a freeway like I-10. It's safe for driver, it's same for tires, it's safe for your car, it's also very durable surface. You've seen concrete freeways all around the country that have lasted many many years," said Herrmann.

Despite the fix, some commuters say they're still running into some issues when they drive on the stretch of road.

Betty Finley is one of the drivers who's car windshield sports multiple cracks and chips from what she says was the now removed asphalt.

Finley now says that while some portions of the stretch of road are smoother, others are bumpy.

"It seems to be a little bit better but it seems like in one spot they bladed the road and that seems really smooth but there's a part where they re patched it and it seems like some of the rocks are still coming up," Finley said.

An ADOT spokesperson told KGUN9 the next project on I-10 is the new interchange at I-10 and Ruthrauff Road.

He said they expect to begin construction by summer time and it could be possible part of the area recently milled could be repaved, however there is no plan for that in the meantime.
