The Cochise County Sheriff's Office is investigating shots fired from what appears to be an AK-47 type of weapon near Sierra Vista, according to a news release.

Deputies say on Sunday at 2:20 a.m. they received several calls of shots being fired in the area of Hereford and Pintek Road, southeast of Sierra Vista.

One caller advised of shots fired and a second caller told deputies that he was driving in the area and was cut off by another vehicle.

As deputies arrived on scene, they located a Honda Accord in the intersection of Pintek and Hereford with "substantial" damage to the front fenders and sides of the vehicle where it appeared to have gone through a fence.

Deputies say the vehicle also has multiple bullet holes along the sides.

Agents from the U.S. Border Patrol were already at the scene and they said a subject there told them they had been cut off while driving in the area by a second vehicle.

Deputies say the initial investigation shows that there was some type of altercation between at least two vehicles and shots were fired from what appears to be an AK-47 type of weapon.

Deputies say that Hereford Road has now re-opened.

Motorists are asked to use alternate routes.

No injuries were reported and the investigation is being continued by the Cochise County Sheriff's Office with the Sheriff's Assist Team providing traffic control.

Deputies say that at 2 a.m. two vehicles were traveling on Pintek Road, one vehicle heading southbound and the other heading northbound.

CCSO says the road has significant ruts because of rain and the soutbound vehicle (a 2004 Toyota Tundra) went into the opposing lane which caused the northbound vehicle (a 2004 Honda) to take "evasive action" and run off the road and through at least one fence.

The driver of the Honda vehicle, 72-year-old Eugene Hinbaugh, then began to follow the Toyota vehicle. Once on Hereford Road, Hinbaugh rammed into the back of the Toyota three times.

The driver of the Toyota advised that he stopped on Hereford Road just east of the road and fired several times at the Honda.

Hinbaugh was taken into custody and is being charged with Aggravated Assault and Endangerment.

CCSO is continuing their investigation in regards to the driver of the Toyota.

Deputies confirm that the weapon used was a semi-automatic AK-47 that is owned legally by the driver of the Toyota.
