The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has completed an investigation into allegations of an assault of an inmate by a corrections officer at the Pima County Adult Detention Center.
A fight occurred in the housing unit where juvenile inmates are placed following arrests for violent crimes on May 26, according to Deputy Cody Gress with the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Corrections officers separated the juveniles and escorted one of them to the medical facility for evaluation. The juvenile was handcuffed and awaiting medical attention when he began making vulgar comments to staff members.
The officer struck the juvenile two times without legal justification, according to Gress.
The corrections officer charged with aggravated assault is Bradley Kerby who PCSD says has been a corrections officer with the department for more than 3 years.
Other corrections officers were present and witnessed the incident. One of the officer witnesses reported the incident to a supervisor, which prompted both criminal and administrative investigations.
The other corrections officers present came forward and fully cooperated with the investigation, said Gress. Another corrections officer refused to cooperate with the investigation and has been terminated from employment.
That officer has been identified as Garrett Andreatta who PCSD says has been a corrections officer with the department for less than one year.
The corrections officer who committed the assault was placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
The case was presented to the Pima County Attorney’s Office, and they determined the correction officer’s actions warranted prosecution for two counts of aggravated assault.
The officer who committed the assault has been served with a criminal complaint and a notice of termination from the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
The juvenile inmate who was assaulted did not report the incident.
