TUCSON, Ariz. — A celebration was held on the southside Monday in honor of Indigenous Peoples Day.

The event held by the group Indigenous Alliance without Borders.

They say it's important to them to celebrate the rich diversity here in Tucson, and to acknowledge the history and hardships indigenous people went through in this country.

Event organizers say it's a day of unity.

Indigenous Peoples Day event organizer Kat Rodriguez says "This is a day of healing and celebration and for us it's a gathering, it's a ceremony, it's recognizing the hurts that have existed and coming together to move forward."

The organization says they've started a campaign to establish indigenous people's day as the second Monday in October, as an alternative to Columbus day.
