RED ROCK, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - The cafeteria at Red Rock Elementary School was crowded as family, friends, and many in the Red Rock community gathered to remember Kim Shelton.

Shelton was shot and killed on December 28th, found in the front yard of her home. Pinal County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Michele Butler, her domestic partner of 15 years. Butler is in jail on $1 million dollar bond.

At the vigil, family remember Shelton as well-liked and considered a sweetheart. They say she loved her two grandkids, and her only daughter Alyson. Alyson sat front-and-center at the vigil and many of her friends came to show support.

"Let her know I love her and if she needs anything that I can help her out," said Jayna Jarvis.

Cheryl Austin, Alyson's mother-in-law, tells Nine On Your Side more about Kim Shelton saying she was like her sister-in-law. Austin says Shelton recently moved to Red Rock from California which brought her closer to her daughter and grandkids.

Austin also knows Butler, the woman accused of killing Shelton.

"No it wasn't surprising," she said.

Although Butler is behind bars, Austin says she is still upset.

"We're just so broken-hearted over this because it never should have happened," she said
