Cochise County Sheriff's is advising the public of a new scam that has hit Benson.

According to Carol Capas with CCSO, a woman saw an advertisement in a local paper asking for someone to care for an elderly woman. The ad listed an email of pmby82@gmail.com and the woman answered saying she is interested.

Capas says arrangements were made and the woman received an envelope by mail from a Katy Ball with a San Diego address with a check inside for $3250.00

Along with the check was instructions for the woman to cash the check and deposit all but $400.00 in a Wells Fargo Account in Tucson. The instructions said she can keep the $400.00

After the woman cashed the check at her bank, she received several overdraft charges. CCSO says that the bank will work with the woman to recoup her losses.

The Cochise County Sheriff's Office is reminding everyone to beware of any instance where you are asked to cash/deposit checks and keep a portion of the amount, Capas says.

This investigation is being continued by CCSO.
