The board that oversees the Central Arizona Project aqueduct system has ended talks to buy land and water rights in Mohave Valley in northwestern Arizona.

Today's News-Herald reports the board over the entity that sends Colorado River water throughout the state agreed Thursday to cancel the $34 million sale of seven farms and associated water rights.

The Central Arizona Project had planned to buy the farmland in the Mohave Valley Irrigation and Drainage District, pay farmers to fallow it and redirect the water to the state's most populous areas.

Central Arizona Groundwater Replenishment District officials had advised the project to cancel the plan. Project spokesperson DeEtte Person says the district determined there were a "number of outstanding due diligence issues that will extend beyond the current due diligence period."
