KGUN9 and Mix 94.9 are gearing up for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk® on Saturday, October 6.

But before the walk, we would like to introduce you to survivors in our community.

Twelve years ago, Deb Carnsew was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer.

"My doctor called and said Deb, I've got some bad news. The test results came back and it's cancer,"  said Carnsew.

Carnsew immediately began radiation with family and friends by her side.

Now she has dedicated her life to finding a cure.

"I'm going to keep doing this until they call me up and say you know what we found a cure. Thanks, but we don't need you anymore," said Carnsew.

Very involved with the American Cancer Society, Carnsew has been Pacesetter, raising more than $2,500 a year leading up to the Making Strides Walk.

"My fundraising efforts are very important. I take it on as a personal challenge. It's about not being afraid to get out there and approach people," said Carnsew.

About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Carnsew's advice to men and women is early detection.

"The most important thing is to take responsibility for your own health and empower yourself. Don't wait for someone else to discover something, " said Carnsew.
