Border Patrol agents from the Tucson Sector arrested a U.S. citizen after they found two Mexican nationals hiding in secret compartments within a Ford Expedition, according to a news release.
Agents were performing a secondary inspection of the vehicle at the I-19 checkpoint on Sunday when they discovered the two after-market compartments with each Mexican national hiding in each compartment.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says the compartments were equipped with external latches but there were no means of escape for the men hiding inside.
CBP says in an emergency situation, the men hiding in the compartments would have been trapped.
The driver of the vehicle is being held by the Border Patrol pending prosecution charges. The Border Patrol will process the Mexican nationals for removal, which is in accordance with Tucson Sector guidelines.
