TUCSON, Ariz. — Avocados, pomegranates and citrus!
On Wednesday night you'll get a chance to get a taste of the fruit that has grown around the historic Benedictine Monastery in midtown.
The Iskashitaa Refugee Network is hosting the event. The non-profit began harvesting the trees around the monastery years ago as a way to help the nuns, and the new owner loved it so much the work has continued.
The network was created in 2003 and it gives refugees a chance to integrate into the Southern Arizona community while also helping local families.
"We harvest for and with the refugee families as they gain skills and cultural organization," said Barbara Eiswerth, the co-founder and executive director. "And we donate half of the food to soup kitchens, food banks, shelters and schools."
The event is from 5 p.m to 6 p.m. at the Ward 6 office at 3202 E. 1st Street. Supplies are limited.
