BP agents assaulted; smugglers arrested

COWLIC, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - No injuries were reported after Border Patrol agents were assaulted by suspected smugglers on Tuesday afternoon.
 
According to a media release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, agents were tracking a group of suspected marijuana smugglers near the village of Cowlic, Arizona on the Tohono O’odham Nation.
 
When agents approached the suspected smugglers, they were assaulted with rocks.
 
Initial reports indicated that one agent discharged his firearm at an attacker, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
 
The attacker and one other suspect are in custody. Multiple bundles of marijuana were also seized during the incident.
 
U.S. Customs and Border Protection says no injuries were reported and the incident is being investigated by the FBI, Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility and Tohono O’odham Nation Police Department.
