A United States Border Patrol agent was involved in a shooting on Friday night outside of Douglas, according to a news release from U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

CBP says the agent was responding to a call of suspicious activity of two possible undocumented individuals at 8 p.m.

The agent then encountered two adult male suspects west of Douglas, between the international boundary and Highway 80 near Kings Highway.

As the agent was attempting to make an arrest, CBP says one of the adult men resisted and instead fought with the agent.

During the struggle, the suspect was able to gain control of the agent's baton.

The agent then shot the suspect, striking him once in the upper portion of his left leg.

The man shot was treated for his injury and transported to a local hospital. He remains hospitalized as he is being treated for a non-life threatening wound.

CBP says the agent was not injured during the incident.

The second suspect fled the area but was subsequently arrested.

Charges against the two men are pending at this time.

The agent will be placed on administrative leave as part of standard procedure.

The FBI, Cochise County Sheriff's Office and CBP's Office of Professional Responsibility are involved in the investigation.
