TUCSON, Ariz. — A prominent Arizonan is now the Secretary of the Air Force.

The Senate confirmed Barbara Barrett on Wednesday.

Barrett is a graduate of Arizona State University.

She unsuccessfully ran for governor in 1994. She served as the U.S Ambassador to Finland under George W. Bush.

In her business career, she is the founding chair of Valley Bank of Arizona.

"Ambassador Barrett's confirmation is a win for Arizona, our Air Force, and our nation,” said Senator Martha McSally (R-AZ). “She is the perfect fit to lead the Air Force in these dangerous and uncertain times. As soon as the position was open, I called my longtime friend Barbara, to ask her to be willing to serve in this role, and encouraged President Trump to nominate her. It is great to see they both agreed. Her confirmation is well overdue, but I am thrilled to finally support her on the Senate floor today. I look forward to hosting her back in Arizona at our amazing Air Force bases as she leads our Airmen."

In May, President Donald Trump nominated her to the role.
