Attorney general says 60 days means that for campaign signs

Posted
Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich says a law that limits placement of campaign signs to 60 days before an election really means 60 days.

Brnovich says in an informal legal opinion issued Tuesday that candidates can't count when early ballots are mailed as Election Day to begin counting the days signs are allowed.

Solicitor General John Lopez wrote that such a legal interpretation could lead to "absurdities." For instance, early ballots could never be mailed because the law says they're mailed about a month before Election Day, setting up a never-ending cycle.

Republican Rep. Kelly Townsend of Apache Junction sought the opinion late last week. She asked for a quick response so candidates have clear guidance of when signs are allowed.
