PHOENIX (AP) - A lawyer who served as former Gov. Jan Brewer's general counsel and before that as Brewer's elections director when she was secretary of state is returning to state government, this time as Attorney General Mark Brnovich's top aide.

Brnovich on Thursday announced that Joseph Kanefield will join the office in May, replacing Michael Bailey as the attorney general's chief deputy and chief of staff.

Kanefield is currently a partner with the national law firm Ballard Spahr LLP. Before joining Brewer's administrations, Kanefield worked as an assistant attorney general from 1995 to 2004.

President Donald Trump last month nominated Bailey to serve as U.S. attorney for Arizona. The appointment awaits confirmation by the U.S. Senate.
