TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - As the monsoon approaches, local first responders are brushing up on their swiftwater rescue skills.

Northwest Fire District crews found themselves training in the middle of a swimming pool today.

"We're going to practice everything from a passive reach out, all the way to inflatable boat, and pulley systems to maneuver, to someone coming downstream and pulling them into the boat," said Captain Brian Keeley, PIO with Northwest Fire District.

Capt. Keeley says that in certain years, the teams will practice in the swift waters of the Gila wilderness.

This year is considered a refresher course and the training takes place in a swimming pool.
