PHOENIX (AP) - An Arizona man studying oncology and the humanities is one of 32 American students who have been selected as the newest Rhodes Scholars and will pursue post-graduate studies at Oxford University.
Thomas M. Carroll of Chandler was announced as one of the recipients Sunday. A senior at Rice University, Carroll is earning degrees in biochemistry and cell biology as well as classical studies.
The winners were selected from 869 applicants endorsed by 316 different colleges and universities.
The scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the prestigious university in England starting next October.
Carroll plans to get a doctorate of philosophy in clinical medicine at Oxford.
Rhodes Scholarships were created in 1902 by the will of British philanthropist Cecil Rhodes.
