A vigil for Vern Friedli will be held at Amphi High School Friday night.

Friedli died Friday at age 80.

Friedli coached the Panthers for 36 years, and 288 of his 331 career wins came at Amphi. He was the winningest coach in Arizona high school football history until Marocs De Niza's Paul Moro broke his record last year.

Friedli coached several players who went on to the NFL, including Michael Bates, who played in the Pro Bowl and was an Olympic bronze medal sprinter.

Friedli retired after the 2011 season.
