The Marana Unified School District has announced that all 18 Marana schools will be closed Thursday, April 26, since a majority of school-based educators and staff plan to participate in the statewide walkout.

The closure will impact preschool through high school.

According to a media release, the district does not know how long schools will be closed but will provide daily updates for parents, staff, and the community

All official District information will be shared at www.maranausd.org.

Parents will continue to receive updates via email, phone call, and social media. Parents are requested to contact their child’s school if they have any changes to their email and telephone number(s).

Based on information at this time, for each day that school is closed, it will be made up at the end of the current school calendar, according to a media release.

Since students are dependent on our food services, breakfast and lunch meals will be served at various school locations as well as through the Marana Cares Mobile service.

The district will provide specific information by Wednesday, April 25 regarding which locations and hours food will be available.

All before and after school programming, student services, student and club activities, and after-school extra-curricular activities, including LEAP will be canceled on all campuses.

Graduation ceremonies will be held as planned, according to the media release.

This was the letter distributed to district parents today:

The Arizona Educators United movement and the Arizona Education Association announced last week that educators and staff throughout the state voted 78% to enact a statewide walkout beginning Thursday, April 26. Many Marana educators and staff have joined this movement in solidarity to demand clear, sustainable solutions to Arizona’s education crisis.

Based on information we have today, a majority of our school based educators and staff plan to participate in the statewide walkout this Thursday, April 26. While the last thing we want to do is close our schools, we cannot appropriately supervise students and ensure student safety; therefore, all 18 Marana schools will be CLOSED Thursday, April 26. At this time, we do not know how long schools will be closed. If a change at the state or local level indicates that we are able to re-open our schools, we will inform you immediately.

Schools will be open and follow their regular school schedule on Tuesday, April 24 and Wednesday, April 25.

Below you will find some immediate things to know. Please refer to the FAQs, attached to this letter, for more detailed information. FAQs are also available on the District Website at www.maranausd.org and will continue to be updated.
