An alert neighbor is being credited with helping Tucson police catch a burglar on the eastside.

TPD says just before 1 p.m. on Monday a neighbor called police to report a suspicious person in the 8600 block of East Colette Street, near East Speedway Boulevard and North Camino Seco.

The neighbor noticed the man walking down an alley who appeared to have broken into a neighbor's home.

Officers responded and canvassed the area, they observed forced entry into the backyard and the residence.

TPD says the man then ran out of the house with property in hand and was detained by officers without incident.

Police have identified the suspect as 49-year-old Ryan Hippensteel.

Hippensteel was arrested for 2nd Degree Burglary, Theft, Possession of Burglary Tools, Criminal Damage, Criminal Trespassing, and an Outstanding Parole Violation Warrant.

Hippensteel was transported and booked into the Pima County Jail.

"The Tucson Police Department would like to thank the vigilant neighbor for quickly reporting the suspicious activity observed that directly led to apprehending the burglary suspect!," TPD said in a press release.
