BUCKEYE, Ariz. (AP) - Three correctional officers were released from the hospital late Monday after becoming sick while inspecting an inmate's cell at a prison outside Phoenix.
A department spokesman said investigators are still sorting out what the substance was that injured the three officers and two additional people who weren't hospitalized.
Buckeye police spokeswoman Donna Rossi said Monday that emergency crews were called to the prison around 2 p.m.
Bill Lamoreaux of the Arizona Department of Corrections said officers became disoriented, light-headed and began to vomit after entering a cell just before noon.
Hazardous material crews investigated the situation. Inmates reported no medical symptoms.
The prison has had past issues with broken locks and a video that captured an officer being beaten by inmates.
