Fire officials are working a large fire near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

According to Phoenix Fire Department, the fire near 38th Street and University Drive was upgraded to a two-alarm response.

“We attack these very carefully. When explosions are heard, that would cause us to back out. Our number one concern at this point it safety,” Phoenix Fire Deputy Chief Shelly Jamison said.
Initial information suggests that the burning structure is a recycling facility. The huge tower of black smoke can be seen for miles around the Valley.
The plume of smoke is drifting east and is so large it can be seen on the ABC15 Desert Doppler.
