Officials are investigating a possible wrong-way crash on the Loop 202 in Tempe.

The crash happened just after 3:30 a.m. on eastbound Loop 202 in between Van Buren Street and Priest Drive.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a Ford Mustang was involved in a crash with a GMC Tahoe.

According to DPS, the driver of the Mustang was ejected from the vehicle and transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

When troopers arrived on the scene, the Mustang was facing the wrong way on the Loop 202. It is unclear if the vehicle was traveling wrong-way or if it spun out of control just prior to the crash.

DPS did not receive any reports of a wrong-way driver prior to the crash.

The driver of the Tahoe was not seriously injured and told DPS he tried to avoid the crash.

The eastbound lanes of the Loop 202 are closed at State Route 143. The closure will last through the morning rush hour.
