Trying to be healthy in the new year? That means working out and hitting the gym. But what if you hate running? Prevention.com suggests an alternative to running - speed walking, which burns calories and provides important health benefits.

Reported by Prevention, you can burn 374 calories by walking an hour at a 4 mph pace. Keep that up 5 days per week, and you could lose an extra ten pounds per year.

Individuals are also sharing their speed walking results on social media, some burning over 800 calories.

You don't need fancy equipment to measure your speed. Simply count the number of steps you take per minute. A 4 mile per hour pace is 135-140 steps per minute.

Power-walking also has major health benefits. According to a 2013 study by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, walking briskly is just as good as running for lowering your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.
