A Phoenix mom reportedly left her three-year-old in a closet while she was in jail., KGUN9 sister station KNXV reports.

Court records show that Phoenix woman left the toddler before leaving where she was later arrested on a shoplifting charge.

According to police, Paige Nicole Adams, 24, was arrested on September 29 for shoplifting. Adams told police her child was left with a friend.

The toddlers grandmother contacted police later that evening and told them she believed the child was home alone.

When police arrived at the apartment near 14th Street and Bell Road they found the toddler barricaded in a closet inside a bedroom.

Police say the child was in a dirty diaper and crying when they arrived. They estimate the toddler was left alone for around 11 hours.

Adams reportedly admitted to police that she was high on heroin at the time she left the child and, "didn't think she'd be gone that long."

Police say they also found multiple syringes in the apartment outside the bedroom.

Records show that Adams has been released from jail and has been charged with child abuse.
