5 Halloween decorating ideas that won't break the bank

Posted
and last updated

If you go all out for Halloween, festooning your roof with zombies and skeletons and turning your lawn into an eerily realistic graveyard, this post may not be for you. However, if you want to do a little something for Halloween but assumed that the décor was too expensive, read on.

There are lots of ways to share a little Halloween spirit without doing major financial damage.

And if you want to save even more money on your holiday decorations, consider buying them right after the holiday, when you can often find dramatically reduced prices (you can store the items and use them next year). Consider using your rewards credit card for the purchase to reap even more savings.

Just remember that high credit card balances can hurt your wallet and also negatively affect your credit scores. You can see where your credit currently stand by viewing your two free scores each month on Credit.com.

Now on to the decorations. Here are my favorites. (Keep in mind prices and availability may change.)

1. Personalization Mall Halloween Garden Flag

Price: $19.95 at PersonalizationMall.com

Greet visitors and passersby with this festive double-sided, 17.25″ x 12.5″ flag. It is personalized with your name, and with the “No Tricks Just Treats” message, kids will know that your house is the place to be! Interchangeable stand is available for $14.99.

2. Assorted Ceramic Halloween Lanterns

Price: $36.54 at Overstock.com

Place or hang these cheerful pumpkin lanterns on either side of your door and insert candles or tea lights to get them glowing. The rustic finish gives the impression that the lanterns have been in the family for years, but have held up beautifully.

3. Black Crow Coir Doormat

Price: $33.49 at Overstock.com

This coir doormat with the imposing crow looks so cool that it could decorate your doorstep all year long. If you’re not familiar, Coir mats are handmade in India from woven coconut fibers, creating a beautiful, yet sturdy piece.

4. Ikea Skruv

Price: $10 at Ikea Stores (not for sale online)

Hang this web of lights on the front of your house to cast a little glow. The net has 48 lights and is safe to be used outdoors (or indoors). Need an oversized spider to go with it? Check out Party City. The place is crawling with them.

5. AllPosters Candy Corn Galore WOWindow Poster

Price: $11.99 at AllPosters.com

This window decal gives the impression that you and the family are literally swimming in candy corns. Wouldn’t it be fun if that were true? Easy to install, remove and re-use.
