Court records show a California man who disrupted operations at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport last week claimed he had a bomb in his travel bag.

John Lincoln Nichols had his initial court appearance Monday before being released on his own recognizance pending a July 28 preliminary hearing. He doesn't have an attorney yet.

The 61-year-old Nichols, of Temecula, was arrested Friday night on suspicion of knowingly giving false information.

Authorities say Nichols was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Nichols went to the Terminal 4 ticketing counter, where an airline employee tagged his check-on bag.

He allegedly said there was a bomb inside the bag and walked away.

Phoenix police were notified, causing a two-hour disruption at the airport.

Police say nothing dangerous was found in Nichols' bag.
